Eleven princes and a total of 38 former ministers, former deputy ministers and businessmen have been arrested in Saudi Arabia as part of an anti-corruption operation ordered by King Mohammed Salman and are being held in five-star hotels in Riyadh.
This was announced by a Saudi government official close to the security services. As is known, among the arrested princes there is also the billionaire Alwaleed bin Talal. According to media sources, some of the detainees are at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in the capital.
Al Arabiya TV reported that the princes, four ministers and several former ministers were arrested after the anti-corruption commission chaired by Prince Salman launched an investigation into old cases such as the floods that devastated Jeddah in 2009. The state-run Saudi Press Agency added that the commission's aim was to "preserve public money, punish the corrupt and those who have exploited their positions."
An air force source said security forces had surrounded private jets on the ground in Jeddah to prevent possible escapes of high-level figures.
