Battipaglia. War device in agricultural land: on Sunday 8 September 2019, the clean-up operations for the device launched by an airplane dating back to the Second World War will take place.
The operations will be conducted by the Italian Army Artificers - 21st Guastatori Regiment of Caserta: they will begin when the evacuation of the population is completed and will last for 8/12 hours. The evacuation will involve 36.000 citizens, residing within a radius of 1600 meters from the point of discovery - the evacuation radius established by NATO regulations based on the type and characteristics of the device - and will begin at 5 in the morning to facilitate the military operations and ensure that citizens can return to their homes as soon as possible.
In addition to the population, the “Santa Maria della Speranza” Hospital, the Town Hall and the Local Police Headquarters will be evacuated. Furthermore, traffic on the A2 Autostrada del Sole will be interrupted.
Mediterranean and on the SS18 “Tirrena Inferiore” and railway traffic (Salerno-Reggio Calabria line and Battipaglia-Potenza-Metaponto line). The provision of essential services, in particular electricity, gas, landlines and mobile telephone lines, will also be suspended. The Prefecture of Salerno, in agreement with the Military Engineers, will coordinate the management of the event through the “Rescue Coordination Center” that will be established on the occasion.
The civil protection system has required a complex planning activity in recent months for the various profiles (evacuation and assistance to the population, health aspects, road and rail traffic, essential services).
