A group of workers from the Jabil plant in Marcianise, in the province of Caserta, together with union representatives, protested in front of the Caserta prefecture

Workers at the Jabil plant in Marcianise protest to raise awareness of a dispute that began in June 2019, continued with over 220 workers dismissed and another 120 still to be placed, but has not yet become central to the political and government scenario, neither nationally nor locally, not even now that there would be resources from the Recovery Fund for technological innovation. Or rather, the dispute was at the center of the news for a few days in June last year alone, when Jabil forced its hand by trying to fire those workers who had not accepted the transfer to other companies, but found a strong reaction from the Conte Government, which blocked the attempt by acting as a "shield" also and above all with the law, still in force today, which blocks dismissals due to the pandemic.

But despite the fact that the ban on layoffs has been extended, workers have taken to the streets to ask for an immediate meeting with the Government and the interest of the Campania Region, because they see many shadows in their future. The real issue is the lack of work at Jabil - workers have been on redundancy for years - which has factories and orders all over the world, and in those companies, such as Softlab and Orefice, which have hired former Jabil; all companies that are focusing on technology but it is not yet known with certainty what they will produce and therefore how they will use the new workforce.

The unions

“None of these companies have yet presented an industrial plan,” says the secretary of Fiom-Cgil of Caserta Francesco Percuoco, “so we don’t know what will happen to Jabil and the former Jabil, and yet there would be Recovery funds for the Green Economy, which could be diverted to these companies.” Matteo Coppola, general secretary of Cgil of Caserta, calls on “the Government to pay greater attention to the South and to companies like Jabil, which is one of the largest companies in the South. And yet Minister Giorgetti has currently blocked all disputes; there are no meetings scheduled. It is true that there is a pandemic, but it is necessary to address these issues of industrial policy, also in view of the opportunities of the Recovery.”

For Antonello Accurso, regional secretary of Uilm, "the block on layoffs is useful to buy time, but if it is not accompanied by the search for industrial solutions, it becomes only a way to plug the situation. We ask the Ministry to open a table, the Region to support Jabil and other companies in relation to the Recovery Plan".

Vincenzo Russo, regional secretary of Failms, asks that “Jabil immediately make known what it intends to do from a production point of view. It has a lot of work, but always outside of Italy, and so even the employees remaining in Jabil are in limbo. The same goes for those placed at Softlab and Orefice: with these new hires, what will these companies produce, what is their plan”?

Nicodemo Lanzetta, secretary of Fim-Cisl, emphasizes that "reindustrialization is completely at a standstill. We ask for industrial plans to start immediately".
