In Naples, a hunt is underway for the accomplices of Marcello Sorrentino, the 22-year-old Neapolitan arrested yesterday after his confession and accused of the attempted murder of the policeman in Naples during the celebrations for Italy's victory at the European Football Championship.

Marcello Sorrentino, who has a criminal record police, had also committed other robberies before the one the other night. The young man had robbed a girl's scooter together with an accomplice.
The young girl had called her father who, having arrived from Secondigliano to Corso Garibaldi, had seen the robber with an accomplice still riding around on a scooter (but not the one robbed from his daughter shortly before).

He had rammed him and while the accomplice had managed to escape he had engaged in a fight with Sorrentino. In the meantime an assistant chief of the State Police who was off duty had arrived and saw Sorrentino fleeing with a gun in his hand and stood in front of him. The 18-year-old shot and hit him in the abdomen, then in the fight he injured himself.

He still managed to escape. But he was tracked down in the hospital where he had gone to have his wound treated. The analysis of the video surveillance systems in the area, the checks on the license plates detected and the statements given by witnesses, which allowed them to gather serious evidence against Sorrentino, who, before the Public Prosecutor, decided to confess, helped to frame the young man.
The investigation also includes the girl's father, who was reported at large for causing injury for having hit Sorrentino and his accomplice who has not yet been traced.

“I am close to Assistant Chief Alborino, who works at the Secondigliano police station, and who was injured yesterday morning during an off-duty intervention to foil an attempted robbery”. Thus the Minister of the Interior, Luciana Lamorgese, congratulating the arrest of the person responsible for the wounding and underlining how “the courageous gesture made by the policeman testifies once again to the spirit of service and dedication of the police force personnel even in particularly difficult contexts that expose them to risks for their safety”.

The Chief of Police, Prefect Lamberto Giannini, yesterday afternoon telephoned the relatives of the Naples police officer who, during the night between Sunday and Monday, off duty, intervened to foil a robbery and was injured. As learned from sources at the Naples police headquarters, Prefect Giannini expressed his “closeness and solidarity” to the policeman’s wife.
