Gomorrah: in presenting the final act or the fifth and final series Roberto Saviano he was keen to point out that “There are no positive heroes in Gomorrah.”
The final act of the cult series SkyOriginal produced by Cattleya in collaboration with Beta Film, will be broadcast worldwide on November 19th in Italy on Sky. Ten new episodes, the latest in a saga that has shocked, enthralled, disturbed and sparked discussion.
And to present Gomorrah 5 to Brancaccio Theatre in Rome Today the two great protagonists thought about it Marco D'Amore and Salvatore Esposito, who will be face to face again, for the last time. And also for the two actors, who built their popularity on the set of Gomorrah, it was time to take stock.
“This series has changed me deeply personally and helped me shake off many prejudices about that land. I lived this experience in balance and feeling the danger of this story. The great fortune I had is that I was not alone on that wire”, D'Amore explained.
And then he added: "Among the many things, the one that has most marked my existence is the meeting with Salvatore, this chemistry at a certain point also began to influence writing. That way of speaking to each other a centimeter from our noses, which was later also parodied, came from us".
“At the end of this journey we could write the effects of Gomorrah on us”, Salvatore Esposito began with a smile, defining it “an incredible and tiring journey that made me grow a lot as a man and an artist. The end of Gomorrah is like the end of a relationship: at the beginning you are euphoric and ready for new adventures, then a bit of melancholy and sadness arrive, but also the awareness of having given perhaps more than my best. And with this awareness I will watch this series in ten years”.
The ten new episodes of 'Gomorra – Final Season' were filmed between Naples, Riga and Rome. They were written by the head writers Leonardo Fasoli e Madeleine Ravagli who also sign the subject of the series with Roberto Saviano, present at the Brancaccio. The first 5 episodes and the ninth are directed by Marco D'Amore, already director of two episodes of Gomorra 4 and the film 'L'Immortale', which acts as a narrative bridge between the fourth and fifth seasons. The remaining episodes are instead directed by Claudius Cupellini, at the helm since the series' inception.
The soundtrack is also signed this season by Mokadelic. With Genny, forced into hiding in a bunker at the end of the fourth season, and Ciro, believed dead at the end of the third season and returned to the scene in Latvia, other famous characters also return such as Azzurra (Ivana Lotito) and the former king of Forcella Enzo Blue Blood (Arturo Muselli). There is no shortage of new additions to the cast.
And, as at the beginning of every new season, the debate on the risk of emulation reignites. D'Amore blurts out when asked: “It's been ten years, I can't take it anymore…”, says the Neapolitan actor, before adding: "Those kids have a good laugh with Gomorrah. We are not the example, they have it before their eyes every day in places where the State does not exist." “You tend to find rottenness where there is none”, echoes Esposito.
The final word on the subject belongs to the author Roberto Saviano: "Gomorrah was the story of the mechanisms of power and profit, a grammar that belongs to the peripheries of the whole world. But 'illuminating', as the series did, means starting to know the path to the solution".
The cult fiction, sold in 193 countries, immersed in contemporaneity, which launched talents and has reached its fifth season (on air from 19 November on Sky Atlantic) was born from the novel by Roberto Saviano (Mondadori) sold all over the world.
“As a boy I went – the writer explained during the presentation at the Brancaccio theatre in Rome – on that Vespa (which he can no longer drive and is under escort, ed.), in Naples and Scampia, to tell the story of power, violence, a reality more complex than the simple story of the criminality of my land. And today to decipher the bullets of any suburb, in Corsica or the Philippines, in Mexico or Brazil, the magic word is Gomorrah”.
Then the inevitable question about the risk of emulation and the absence of the State. Roberto Saviano once again explains: “The presence of the State is seen as interference and crime in the post-Covid era is making huge investments… No one became a criminal by watching Gomorrah, no one became a priest by watching Don Matteo or a drug dealer because they saw Breaking Bad.”
"The protagonists are already defeated, they know they are prey, they are alone, they cannot trust anyone, they are aware that sooner or later they will die or be killed by rivals or betrayed. Why should the public emulate them?".
“This controversy about evil arises from a series of misunderstandings. The series does not push towards evil, but helps to understand it by providing the tools to understand and dismantle it. Gomorrah does not tell the perimeter of Scampia, but tells the story of all the peripheries of the world: and only a series could allow this. Gomorrah tells the story of power. The goal was to build a narrative of our time: either you screw or you are screwed. With Gomorrah we do not want to say 'this is good' or 'this is evil' but we want to submit the complexity of the world to the viewer”.
