New Year's Eve with sunshine, high pressure is coming. From Thursday a stable phase will begin with exceptionally high temperatures
Between today and tomorrow the last rains will still affect the southern regions, Sicily and the border areas of the north-western Alps, where significant phenomena cannot be ruled out.
A stable phase will begin on Thursday with exceptionally high temperatures just before New Year's Eve, especially in the Alps.
The disturbance that reached Italy yesterday is already moving away with the last traces in terms of local rains in the South and north-east of Sicily.
Mistral winds follow the front, bringing slightly cooler air to the South.
However, the thermal picture does not change much, with temperatures generally remaining above normal.
Cloud masses passing beyond the Alps are touching the northern reliefs: in particular, a warm front, between this evening and tomorrow, could cause significant precipitation along the Alpine crests on the border but with a decidedly high snow limit, rising on Wednesday even well above 2000 metres.
For the last days of the year, the expansion from north-western Africa of a strong high pressure field is confirmed, associated with an extremely mild air mass, which right around New Year's Eve will favor exceptionally high temperatures - say meteorologists at IconaMeteo.it -, in particular in the Alps where the difference could be even 10-15 degrees above the seasonal average.
The widespread stability will however favor the formation of fog or very low clouds, locally even persistent, especially in the Po Valley, on the upper Adriatic and in the Ligurian sector. In the foggy areas, daytime temperatures will remain more contained, making the positive thermal anomaly less evident. Forecast for the next few hours.
Mostly cloudy skies over much of Italy with possible larger clearings between lower Lazio, Abruzzo, Molise, Campania and southwestern Sicily. In the first part of the day scattered rains over Calabria and Messina, more intense on the Tyrrhenian sector of Calabria; isolated rains over southern Puglia.
Snow in Valle d'Aosta and on the reliefs of upper Piedmont above 1000-1400 m; occasional light rain in western Tuscany. During the afternoon the phenomena in the South will tend to weaken and end almost everywhere by evening. In the evening precipitation along the north-western and central Alps, more intense in the border areas, with the snow line gradually rising from 1400 to 2000 m. Maximum temperatures slightly increasing in the North and in Sardinia, stable or slightly decreasing in the South.
Windy on the western seas, on the lower Ionian and on the two major islands due to moderate or strong Mistral winds; mainly light winds on the central-northern regions. Seas: slightly rough in most of the Adriatic; rough in the upper Tyrrhenian Sea, the Strait of Otranto and the upper Ionian; up to very rough in the remaining basins, locally also rough in the lower Tyrrhenian Sea and the Channels of the Islands. Forecast for Wednesday 29 December.
Very cloudy skies on the lower Tyrrhenian side with some scattered rain between Calabria, especially in the south, and the north-east of Sicily. Variable cloudiness, but only occasional light rain over Puglia. It will rain in Valle d'Aosta and on the central-northern Alps of Piedmont, especially in the border areas, with snow only at high altitudes above 2000-2300 meters; between the afternoon and evening the precipitations will gradually extend to the northernmost Alps of Lombardy and on Alto Adige with snow above about 1800 m.
In the rest of Italy the sky will be partly cloudy to cloudy but without precipitation. In the Po Valley and on the northern Adriatic coasts dense fog or mist, partially clearing in the afternoon hours. Minimum temperatures rising in the Alps, Central Italy and Sardinia.
Maximum temperatures rising by a few degrees on the Alps, Piedmont, Liguria, Emilia, central regions and Sicily; values around 20 degrees on the major islands. Mistral winds up to strong or locally strong on Sardinia and Sicily, Mistral strong on the southern Tyrrhenian Sea, moderate on the middle and lower Adriatic Sea; from the evening local episodes of Foehn in the western Alpine valleys. Light winds elsewhere. Seas: very rough western seas, up to rough in the Sea of Corsica and Sardinia, the Channel of Sardinia and Sicily; mostly slightly rough in the upper Adriatic and upper Ionian, rough in the southern Ionian, middle and lower Adriatic. Forecast for Thursday 30 December.
Day with stable weather over Italy and mostly sunny. Some residual cloudiness in the morning over the eastern Alps, Friuli, South and islands. In the Po Valley and on the Adriatic coasts of Northern Italy there will be widespread fog in the morning, only partially clearing in the afternoon; fog and mist that will reform and thicken again during the evening.
Some fog banks during the coldest hours also in the valleys of the Center. Minimum temperatures everywhere above zero, even in the northern regions. Maximum temperatures increasing in the Center-North, except in the foggy areas of the northern regions; without major variations in the South and Islands with values up to 18-20 degrees in Sardinia, Sicily and Calabria.
Moderate or locally strong Mistral winds but gradually decreasing on the Strait of Sicily, the Sea and the Channel of Sardinia; Mistral moderately strengthening instead on the middle-lower Adriatic, Puglia and the Ionian; weak winds elsewhere. Seas: calm or slightly rough in the central-northern Adriatic, rough or very rough in the remaining basins but with wave motion gradually decreasing.
