The eruption of an underwater volcano off the coast of Tonga, an island nation in Polynesia, triggered a tsunami with waves of about 1,2 meters, for which a warning was issued in several countries in the South Pacific. The waves were observed in the capital of Tonga and the capital of Samoa.
Videos posted on social media show the water coming violently ashore, sweeping away cars and crashing into homes. The capital of Tonga is located 65 kilometers north of the volcano, which is called Hunga Tonga-Hunga.
The eruption was very powerful and lasted about 8 minutes. It was so violent that it was felt as far away as Fiji, the BBC reports, quoting authorities in the capital Suva. The Fijian government has not only raised the alarm, but has also opened shelters for people living on the coast.
