Can we be on first name terms?” Compliments follow, a request for news about family and children and then the “gift” to the interlocutor of two watches, apparently expensive and branded, in elegant cases.
“I was supposed to give them to a notary, but unfortunately he died. You know what I'll do, I'll give them to you. I'm glad I saw you again. One is for your partner.” Faced with the interlocutor's perplexity he insists: “Accept them, don’t be embarrassed.”
Then, once the resistance was overcome, the request: “I only ask that you don’t charge me the import tax. How much can you give me?”
It is a variant of the scam, which has been going on for years, of “I'm the cousin of…. do you remember? I had a flat tire, can you lend me something?”
