“It means that it had to be this way, we can't do anything to change it, but we certainly can't get our faces dirty, at least we want to keep that clean”.
Speaking is Maddalena Imperatore, now 39 years old, wife of Roberto Manganiello, regent of the clan of Gennaro and Gaetano Marino, leaders of the homonymous clan of the "Celestial Houses" of Secondigliano, as their niece, intercepted by the judicial police in September 2016 while talking to her mother-in-law, Lorenza Marino, after a conversation in prison with her husband.
The woman is shocked: Roberto Manganiello (arrested in 2016 after a period of hiding) has in fact communicated to her that he intends to admit his responsibilities regarding the crimes that the Anti-Mafia Prosecutor's Office of NAPLES is accusing him of. And she prefers to maintain her position within the clan rather than a reduction in sentence for her husband ("... I want to stay alone for another ten years, but I want to stay clean, or not? ... between twenty and thirty that will change them...").
The conversation is contained in the order with which the Court of Appeal of NAPLES rejected the request for arrest for mafia association of Immacolata Rispoli, known as Tina, widow of the boss Gaetano Marino. For the judges, that conversation with her mother-in-law demonstrates that the woman hopes, the judges write, "... that her husband will go back on his choice, she states that she 'wants to continue dreaming', where her 'dream' consists in continuing to be respected and admired by the clan's associates.
She hopes that her husband will opt for a different choice, and consequently for a much more severe sentence – rather than suffer the shame of a repentance, continuing to be respected and admired by the clan members”. “…If I have to make my own life, I want to do it without you for a reason, for a good thing,” the woman continues, “not that I should also be criticized and I should also be laughed at, because one day my children will grow up…, one day my children will grow up and my children should never be able to say: 'dad' what have you done? What's wrong with you? What have you done?'…”.
