With the death of Queen Elizabeth II , Charles, Prince of Wales, is crowned British King at the age of 73 (He will be 74 in November). After a life in his mother's shadow, he has waited longer than any other heir to the throne for the fateful day, with the prospect of becoming the oldest Dauphin to be crowned monarch in British history.
A coronation awaited for a lifetime, and at 73 years of age her destiny is fulfilled, marked since her birth on 14 November 1948 at Buckingham Palace, when her grandfather George VI was there. She succeeds Elizabeth II, the queen of records, with many doubts: the undisputed popularity consolidated over time by his mother will be a further burden to bear together with that of the succession.
Charles, the eternal heir
The Prince of Wales had the reputation of 'eternal heir', a moment that of his coronation that seemed never to arrive. A moment that is arriving now despite rumors of a direct passage of the scepter to his firstborn William, prince of the new generation who for now will be assigned a function of right-hand man.
Indeed, in recent years Charles has been increasingly called upon to replace the Queen on increasingly important occasions, up to the crucial one of reading the traditional Queen's Speech in Parliament in 2022.
Marriage to Diana and Tragic Death
Charles has been at the centre of world attention for a long time, going through many difficult moments and ending up at the centre of controversy on several occasions: from his divorce from his first wife Diana, to the tragic death of the 'people's princess' in a car accident in Paris in 1997.
Despite this, Charles seems to have overcome the difficulties without major setbacks: he managed to 'normalize' his divorce and accepted his second marriage to his beloved Camilla, but also for his international public commitment to the defense of the environment, his attention to social issues and the intention to modernize and streamline the royal house. And now he finds himself living a "second life", with many unknowns and with the responsibility of having to carry forward an institution like the monarchy in the post-modern era: safeguarding tradition while keeping up with the times.
