Spectacular sighting in the waters between the Punta Campanella Marine Protected Area and Capri.
In the stretch of sea between Massa Lubrense, in the Sorrento peninsula and the blue island, some boaters yesterday filmed a small group of Fin Whales. The large marine mammals were spotted a few meters from the vessel. The Punta Campanella MPA released the video which immediately went viral on social media.
The presence of fin whales, like sperm whales and other cetaceans, is not new to that area of the sea which in fact falls within an “Important Marine Mammal Area”, an area of importance for marine mammals, as recognised by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) a few years ago.
Cetaceans frequently pass between the Pontine Islands and the Gulf of Naples
A vast area between the Pontine Islands, Ischia, Capri and Punta Campanella that sees the frequent passage and presence of 7 species of cetaceans, including whales, sperm whales and dolphins. To protect the latter, the Punta Campanella MPA has been participating in the project co-financed by the European Commission, LifeDelfi, for two years and has organized free dolphin watching courses for November.
