“I have not received a cultural education but I have read hundreds of books, so I am informed about treatments, I pray that I can be treated with better drugs and therapies”. Cosa Nostra boss Matteo Messina Denaro, locked up for ten days in the maximum security prison of L’Aquila, is said to have repeated this thought several times, in calm and cordial tones. To doctors and prison staff, the only people he is allowed to speak to given the 41bis regime, he “confesses” that his worries are related to the treatment of colon cancer.
The godfather of Castelvetrano was arrested in Palermo on January 16th while he was in a Palermo clinic to undergo treatment. It was precisely because of his condition that it was decided to transfer him to the Abruzzo prison because the city hospital has a good oncology center. The boss began treatment in the condition of a prisoner under the 41bis regime in the past few days. He underwent the first cycle of chemotherapy in the clinic created specifically for this purpose in the maximum security prison of L'Aquila. Messina Denaro, who was examined, appeared to be in good physical and psychological condition, having had no side effects after more than three hours of treatment. He will be given another chemotherapy but not before being visited again by the Oncology team of the S. Salvatore hospital.
“The setting up of the clinic is a virtuous model because it avoids risks and allows for a significant saving of resources. Furthermore, nothing has been diverted from normal care,” health sources from the ASL of L’Aquila had said in recent days after the first chemotherapy session. The position also concerned some controversy according to which the Cosa Nostra superboss, arrested after thirty years of being a fugitive, was reserved for privileged treatment. “No one has lost anything, in a few days the space was set up because it is the most convenient thing for the State and the community. In fact, transferring Messina Denaro to San Salvatore would have required an unprecedented deployment of forces and security measures. Matteo Messina Denaro is an Italian citizen registered as a patient in our health system and as such has the same rights and duties as others. The doctors who are treating him are servants of the state who have been asked to take care of a patient. Therefore, they are doing their duty in full respect of the doctor-patient relationship.”
