Second chemotherapy session for Matteo Messina Denaro inside the super prison of L'Aquila. This morning the hospital's team of oncologists led by the head Luciano Mutti is assisting in the ad hoc clinic near the boss's cell in 41bis, the administration of the therapy for colon cancer.
According to prison and health sources, Messina Denaro appeared to be in good shape and increasingly trusting of doctors. In reference to the disease, he declared himself “fatalistic,” with a positive attitude toward treatment. “The patient is in good condition, he has an appetite, he is rested, these are good indicators,” the sources say.
He renounced his appeal against the pre-trial detention in prison before the Review Court Giovanni Luppino, arrested together with the boss Messina Denaro on January 16 and accused of being the mafia boss's driver.
The prosecutors are accusing him of the crimes of procuring non-compliance with the sentence and aiding and abetting aggravated by having facilitated the mafia. In view of the hearing at the Review Court, the Prosecutor's Office had filed, among other things, a photo found on the suspect's cell phone showing the mafia boss's Giulietta parked in front of Luppino's house on December 25th.
A circumstance that contradicts the defense thesis of the suspect who said, during the preliminary hearing, that he had met the boss six months earlier under the name of Andrea Bonafede and that he had seen him again only on the morning of his arrest, when Messina Denaro, again under a false name, had shown up at his house to ask him for a ride to the Maddalena clinic.
