Partial removal of the landfill and securing of what remains. Guarantees for the bathing area. Reclamation and securing of the seabed and beaches.
These are the highlights of the final project for Bagnoli, illustrated today by the mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, who is also the extraordinary government commissioner for the issue, in today's meeting at Palazzo Chigi of the Control Room for the area, called to define the strategic directions for the development of the Environmental Remediation and Urban Regeneration Program for the part of Naples occupied by Italsider since the early 900s.
The Cabina was chaired by the Minister for European Affairs, the PNRR and Cohesion Policies, Tommaso Foti. The Control Room, in the February 2024 session, had given the mandate to develop alternative project proposals with less environmental impact and faster times for the reclamation of the beach and the marine area.
"It has been assessed - said Manfredi - that the environmental impact of total removal would be greater than a partial removal. The section of landfill that will remain will be sealed both for the benefit of the artificial beaches located laterally and for the creation of platforms from which it will be possible to access the sea and also practice water sports".
As for the financial coverage of the marine reclamation, the resources amount to 1,2 billion euros of the 2021-2027 programming and it is expected that the work can be completed between 2028-2029.
"What we will carry out - Manfredi underlined - is the largest marine clean-up operation ever done in Europe and in fact there is a regulatory gap even at a European level that contemplates similar operations. In the latest decree of the Ministry of the Environment, with the availability of the Civil Protection and the ministry, we have introduced a rule for which marine pollution follows specific analysis rules under the supervision of Ispra and the Istituto Superiore della Sanità. It is a model that can also be used in other parts of Italy".

It is important that we are talking about reclamation but there are many points to clarify such as the timing and the real guarantees for bathing. I hope that there are no delays as usual because people need a safe area.
