Crotone – Leading figures of Calabrian organised crime were present at the wedding of the daughter of Giorgio Greco, believed by investigators to be at the top of the Cariati 'ndrina.
Article Key Points
Operation “Boreas”, which yesterday led to twenty arrests, has revealed disturbing details about the ceremony, which was attended by Dominic Megna, head of the homonymous gang of Papanice (Crotone), and Joseph Cariati, a prominent figure in the Farao Marincola clan of Cirò. The latter is the brother of a man involved in a murder that occurred in Stuttgart in 1984, an event that drew the attention of German and Italian authorities to the activities of the 'ndrangheta in Germany.
The custody order, signed by the preliminary investigations judge Sara Merlini, reports the dialogues that took place between Giorgio Greco and Rocco Creolese, from which information emerges on the past and current structures of the 'ndrangheta, as well as references to murders and drug trafficking.
A judge and a member of the police force among the guests
According to the investigating judge, among the wedding guests was also Provino Meles, a justice of the peace from Naples, who Greco allegedly tried to transfer to Cirò to favor the gang with his role.
A day of celebration for Giorgio Greco, considered by the Catanzaro DDA to be the head of the Cariati 'ndrina. The location is a renowned venue in Mandatoriccio, where his daughter's wedding is being celebrated. Among the guests, however, there are not only relatives and friends: the police officers, hidden in the crowd, note down names and conversations, which later turned out to be fundamental for the investigation.
Our “judge” and the bigwigs of the 'ndrangheta
Among those present, one stands out Dominic Megna, head of the Papanice gang, one of the most influential names in the Crotone 'ndrangheta. But he is not the only one: the ceremony is attended by leading figures from local mafia families, some members of the police force and even a lawyer who acts as justice of the peace at the Court of Appeal of Naples.
Greek, indicating a man to his future son-in-law, presents him as Meles Audition, at the time under house arrest as part of the operation Boreas. «He is our judge», he says confidently, adding that he will soon return to Calabria, to Cirò, to «conzare» (sort out) the group's affairs. The boss's confidence is high: «We will bring him home 99% of the time», he states.
Meles, appointed justice of the peace in Gragnano with a resolution of the CSM on 21th November 2021, is present together with his brother Raffaele, also a lawyer and ended up under house arrest. For investigators, the interest in his return is not a personal issue, but strategic for the organization.
Stuttgart Massacre and “Marked” Tables
The wiretaps reveal other disturbing details. One of the guests is identified as the brother of Basilio Cariati, convicted in 1985 by the Stuttgart Court for murder and attempted murder in collusion with a bloody feud. "He's been in prison for 40 years," Greco comments.
Even the arrangement of the tables is not random. The boss chats with the singer of the evening, a well-known face of Calabrian popular music, asking him who the guests at a specific table are. Among them is Mico Megna, leader of the Papanice gang, arrived in the company of men from Rocca di Neto.
Carabinieri at the wedding? "No problem"
Greco suspiciously notices the presence of two carabinieri and asks for explanations. He is reassured: "He is a soldier who is completely calm," they tell him. Nothing to fear.
The investigations confirm a system of solid relationships between crime, professionals and the state apparatus. A network that, even today, shows how deep-rooted the influence of the 'ndrangheta is in Calabria.
The investigation continues to reveal the fabric of relationships between members of the 'ndrangheta and apparently unsuspected figures, confirming the infiltration of organised crime in various areas of society.

The article is very interesting but there are many aspects that are not well understood, such as the presence of judges and police at a wedding of this type. It is worrying to think that the mafia could have such ties.
