CASTEL VOLTURNO (CE) – A serious act of vandalism has hit theOasis of Variconi, one of the naturalistic jewels of Campania: yesterday morning, one of the three observation huts recently built thanks to a project of the WWF Italy, financed with funds from the Jova Beach Party and Intesa Sanpaolo, was found reduced to ashes.
The fire, clearly of a malicious nature, was started before the official inauguration, scheduled for just over a month. The event was supposed to mark a further step forward in the redevelopment of the area, helping to close a page of illegality and degradation in an area of extraordinary environmental importance and with strong ecotourism potential.
Indignation and determination emerge from the words of Raffaele Lauria, regional delegate of WWF Campania: “Il WWF, with its volunteers, expert biologists, ornithologists and guards, will continue to support the Municipality, the Reserve Authority and the numerous local associations. The goal is to strengthen the detachment from the past, when this area was the victim of building speculation and illegality. We will not be intimidated: our commitment to the enhancement and protection of the Variconi will continue with even greater determination”.
Lauria stressed that the work to promote the oasis will not stop: “We will continue to raise awareness of the naturalistic importance of this area, ensuring safe and responsible use, with the involvement of the scientific community and citizens”.

It is truly sad to hear of acts of vandalism like this that affect the Oasi dei Variconi. We hope that the authorities can find those responsible and that this area important to all of us can be protected. Nature deserves respect.
