On the morning of March 10, demolition operations began on 60 illegal fishing structures along the banks of the Volturno river, in the municipality of Castel Volturno, for a stretch of approximately 9 km starting from the mouth.
. The intervention, which will last several days, aims to restore the legality and beauty of an area spoiled by illegal constructions.
The illegal structures, built in recent years, consisted of steel pylons and cables that supported large fishing nets, called “Cala Cala”, as well as rooms used as warehouses for equipment and small boats.
Their presence, in addition to being an eyesore for the natural landscape, hindered the free flow of water and constituted a symbol of illegality for the territory.
The demolition operation, made possible thanks to the synergy between the Municipality of Castel Volturno, the Campania Region and the Province of Caserta, was preceded by a joint investigation by the Carabinieri Forestali and the Port Authority, which led to the charging of several crimes, including illegal occupation of state-owned land, urban planning, building and landscape violations, and violations of the rules for the protection of the natural habitat and public waters.
The Municipality of Castel Volturno issued the demolition orders, the Campania Region financed the intervention with 593.317,04 euros, and the Province of Caserta took care of the design and contracting of the works. The demolition costs will be recovered later through recovery procedures.
The demolition and waste disposal operations will be supervised by the police, and at the end of the intervention, the stretch of the Volturno river will be returned to the community, free from illegal constructions and a symbol of a territory that wants to turn the page.
