Caserta – “The Earth is finished. Uses, reuses and abuses of the land” is the theme at the centre of the conference scheduled for Friday 4 April, at 10:XNUMX a.m., in the Liccardo room of the Department of Political Sciences of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli".
The event is part of the “Night of Geography”, a global initiative that celebrates geographical studies with events aimed at students, academics and enthusiasts, promoting a discipline that is increasingly neglected in Italy, where geographical illiteracy is rampant following its removal from school curricula.
The mayor of Caserta, Carlo Marino, the director of the Department of Political Sciences, Francesco Eriberto d'Ippolito, and Mariano Nuzzo, superintendent of Archaeology, Fine Arts and Landscape for the provinces of Caserta and Benevento and the metropolitan area of Naples, will open the proceedings. The conclusions will be entrusted to Vincenzo Pepe, director of the Doctorate of Research in Environment at “Vanvitelli”, while the moderation will be curated by Rosario De Iulio.
The conference is intended as an opportunity to reflect on land management policies, an increasingly scarce resource in an area like the one between Caserta and Naples, marked by intense urbanization and, at the same time, by worrying phenomena of degradation. Wild, often abusive, cementation, environmentally unsustainable uses and growing erosion represent apparently unstoppable challenges.
However, scholars point out that technology today offers advanced monitoring and analysis tools, capable of guiding people towards more informed choices and countering a predatory approach to the environment.
Not just ecology: soil is also an archive of human memory, custodian of the traces of past civilizations, a particularly relevant aspect in territories rich in history such as the Campania plain.
Between academic interventions and debate, the appointment at the “Vanvitelli” promises to be a key moment to rethink the relationship between man and territory, in an era in which the earth, literally, seems “finished”.

The topic of the conference is very interesting but I wonder if the current problems of the soil will be addressed. Let's hope that effective solutions can be found for the concreting and erosion.
I agree that it is important to discuss these issues. It is essential that there are more events like this to raise awareness of the issues of geography and land management.
