The investigation into the fraud of false medical certifications in Naples began following a report from ASL Napoli 1, resulting from an anonymous complaint. This was confirmed by Deputy Prosecutor Sergio Amato, coordinator of the Section for Crimes against Public Administration, during a press conference at the Naples Prosecutor's Office.
The investigation led to 96 suspects and the execution of 70 precautionary measures, of which 67 were between prison custody and house arrest. The operation involved the use of Carabinieri from NAS departments throughout Italy, with the support of the Provincial Command of Napoli.
The investigations, conducted by the NAS Carabinieri, revealed an illicit system involving the falsification of public documents and certifications by some forensic doctors, as well as episodes of corruption and violations in the funeral business sector. The investigators were able to reconstruct the fraudulent mechanism thanks to telephone and environmental interceptions.
In a video released by the NAS, exchanges of money and documents can be observed between the owners of funeral homes and doctors, with the former giving the latter pre-signed certificates. “The funeral homes showed up at the doctor with the documentation ready,” explained prosecutor Amato, “while the doctor attested to having made the home visit without ever having been there and without even taking DNA samples.”
The investigation has uncovered a long-standing pattern of irregularities that investigators say could have even broader ramifications.
