Personnel from the Flying Squad, together with personnel from the Port Authority and the Guardia di Finanza – Naples Naval Station, have proceeded to arrest a suspect in the crime of aggravated aiding and abetting illegal immigration, a precautionary measure issued against the Egyptian citizen MAM, aged 45.
In particular, on the morning of August 14, the NGO ship Life Support had landed in the port of Naples, carrying 75 migrants of Egyptian, Syrian, Eritrean and Somali nationality, people who in the previous days had been rescued, in international waters, while on board a wooden vessel, in difficulty.
The investigation, directed by the Public Prosecutor's Office of Naples and aimed at identifying the so-called traffickers, was carried out by questioning the refugees on board and by examining some videos recorded with the smart-phones in the possession of the migrants and the suspect, which revealed that the arrested person was the person who acted as the commander of the vessel.
Another Egyptian citizen, who was caught on video cooperating with the trafficker, was later reported at large.
Following the hearing to validate the arrest, the preliminary investigations judge of Napoli validated the provision, applying the personal custodial precautionary measure.
