The Archaeological Park of Pompeii launches, through a public notice, two projects to be implemented through the activation of a special form of partnership: “Azienda Agricola Pompei” and “ – Horti Plinii – Pliny's Educational Garden”, with the aim of enhancing and redeveloping the numerous green areas that are currently unused or underused within the various sites.
In fact, the Archaeological Park of Pompeii includes, in addition to the archaeological areas, vast green areas made up of productive or abandoned agricultural plots, equipped areas and abandoned rural buildings that can become a development engine for a new, expanded use of the Park and make it energy self-sufficient, enhance it as a garrison of biodiversity as urbanization advances and make it a driving force for sustainable production activities from an environmental, social and legal point of view.
Cultural and rural tourism induced by an innovative management of green areas, moreover, can generate not only an ethical and sustainable economy, open to the surrounding territory, but also represent a valid instrument for the protection of the archaeological heritage thanks to the progressive lightening of the anthropic load and the tourist impact.
The aim is therefore to protect biodiversity through the agricultural regeneration of the territory as a strategic element of environmental maintenance and to provide environmental education, through a careful choice of cultivated and reproduced species, in compliance with and updated interpretation of the techniques and cultivation methods of the ancient world, in compliance with the archaeological nature of the sites and the promotion of good practices towards the communities of the territory surrounding the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.
The partnership management that will deal with the production, transformation and marketing of agricultural products and by-products, will also be oriented to guarantee, in addition to the conservation of the areas and their archaeological values, the development of a circular economy model.
The Pompei Agricultural Company will be composed of many macro-sectors of action: olive growing, viticulture, floriculture, fruit growing, cereal growing, beekeeping, horticulture, forestry/wildlife, grazing, composting, scientific, nursery but above all social and educational.
Both in Pompeii and at the Villas of Stabiae in Castellammare di Stabia, at Villa Regina in Boscoreale, at Longola in Poggiomarino, at the Real Polverificio Borbonico in Scafati, educational centers will be created with synergic micro gardens - the project "Horti Plinii - Pliny's Educational Garden" based on the cultivation of the vegetable garden and the utilitarian garden, through the relationship between man and nature in the ancient world, on the basis of archaeological data and through the study of the ancient texts of Pliny the Elder, Columella and other ancient authors who teach what and how to grow.
The Archaeological Park of Pompeii therefore aims to become a place of valorization of the history of each person through Social Agriculture, a source of individual and community well-being of rediscovery of personal and territorial identity that within a unique historical context in the world creates a sustainable model of active citizenship and inclusion, through the involvement of young people or with low education or with some disability, a laboratory of experiences and accessible to all, no longer a place of history that seems distant, but a heritage and a place to live daily in its many opportunities.
“We are thrilled to be able to launch two strategic projects through a public notice: this allows us to expand and extend the experience of social agriculture and inclusion that we have already partially activated in the Park, combining the concrete involvement of people and diversified realities, with the valorization of the natural heritage that we have, with great potential that has not yet been developed” - declares the Director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, Gabriel Zuchtriegel - “The Park will continue on this courageous and innovative path, with initiatives that are demonstrating how places of culture can, through the help and recovery of nature, become laboratories of greater luxury and sustainability”.
