The Carabinieri of the Pontifical Villas Station and the Operational Unit of the Castel Gandolfo Company have arrested in flagrante a 30-year-old originally from Napoli, seriously suspected of the crime of aggravated extortion in conjunction with the detriment of an elderly local woman.
On Friday morning, a 78-year-old woman went to the Carabinieri barracks "Ville Pontificie" scared after receiving a strange phone call from a man who, after identifying himself as a Carabiniere on duty in Castel Gandolfo, told her that his son had been involved in an accident in which a little girl had been run over and that, to avoid his arrest, he ordered her to hand over 3.000 euros in cash to a lawyer who would shortly meet her at her home.
Having received the elderly woman's report, the Carabinieri, after reassuring her that she had been a potential victim of a scam and complimenting her for having had the promptness to contact a real barracks, immediately organized a control device near the woman's home where, shortly after, a young man arrived on board a taxi who, getting out of the vehicle, introduced himself as lawyer Rossi, and made the elderly woman hand over the sum of 2.500 euros in cash.
After the delivery, the Carabinieri stopped the man, returning the cash to the elderly lady, and later ascertaining that, traveling from Naples, he had reached the capital by train, taking a taxi at Termini Station, asking to be taken to the address in Castel Gandolfo and to be taken back to the same train station immediately afterwards.
