This morning, in the evocative setting of the council chamber of the Municipality of Gragnano, the presentation of the Consortium of Producers of the Sorrentine Peninsula DOP took place.
“My presence together with the winemakers and wineries of the Sorrento Peninsula, Monti Lattari, the city of Gragnano and the adjacent municipalities, wants to represent our commitment and attention towards a sector that has been the protagonist of the growth of national and Campania viticulture, thanks to the contribution of the many small and medium-sized businesses that, in the last twenty years, have brought this sector to unthinkable levels of quality and safety”, explained Rosario Lopa, spokesperson for the National Council for Agriculture and Tourism.
Wine, an authentic synthesis of our territories, is the typical product par excellence, capable of conferring prestige to Made in Italy on a global level. Despite the forecasts of qualitative growth in the sector, despite the economic contraction of consumption, it is essential to intensify our presence on international markets.
Our wine expresses the authenticity, the safety of controls and, above all, the cultivation and production practices aimed at the protection and health of citizens, with roots in history, traditions and the infinite variety of flavors influenced by the microclimates, crops and typologies of our territory.
The Government has already launched significant initiatives for the wine sector, recognizing its leading role in the Agri-food and Catering sectors, both nationally and internationally. This sector can be a crucial lever to start a process of territorial development, focused on spreading knowledge of local peculiarities and promoting a complete and integrated tourist offer.
The creation of the Consorzio Produttori Penisola Sorrentina DOP represents an essential step forward to regulate and promote the sector, strengthening the link between territory, agri-food products and tourism, especially in the internal areas and in the zones with a strong wine-growing vocation. The defense of the typicality of the territory is an important message for citizens, underlining that our agricultural system is strategic and that our presence on the markets contrasts the globalization and standardization that they would like to impose on us.
The presentation of the Consortium is a further fundamental step towards the development of management, protection, surveillance and enhancement programs that the wines of the Sorrento Peninsula deserve. This Consortium must be representative and inclusive of companies that believe in the Gragnano – Sorrento Peninsula denomination. We have enthusiastically supported their commitment, contributing not only to the enhancement of agriculture, the conservation of the countryside and the protection of the territory, but also to the overall elevation of our region.
For the Region, it is of great importance to have a point of reference with which to share objectives and strategies for the development of such an important sector as the wine sector. Now, with the Consortium, we have the necessary tool to work together in order to enhance our wines and expand our action, starting with protection. Thanks to this Consortium, we will have the opportunity to interact directly with authorities around the world, taking effective action against imitations and counterfeits.
The Consortium will be able to implement the management policies of the Indications and Denominations together with the Italian regional and national authorities, also facilitating the surveillance activity on the production and marketing of the products. Equally significant will be the implementation of initiatives to make the wines of the Peninsula increasingly better known in Italy and in the world. This additional role of the Consortium, combined with its already important responsibilities in terms of management, protection and valorization of wine, will contribute to further consolidate the sector.
Wine, while maintaining its productive and economic dimension, remains above all an identity dimension.
The presentation was attended by Councilor Nicola Caputo, the mayor of Gragnano Nello D'Auria, the President of the Consortium Raffaele La Mura, the Councilor for Agriculture of the Municipality of Gragnano Luca De Riso, and the expert Yuri Buono. The meeting was moderated by the journalist Francesco Fusco. At the end of the event, a tasting of the wines of all the producers registered with the Consortium of Producers of the Sorrentine Peninsula DOP took place, masterfully curated by the Hotel Institute "Francesco De Gennaro" of Vico Equense.
