Rome. The number of suicides in prison in Italy continues to rise. From the beginning of the year to December 10, 67 inmates have died, 46 of them by hanging.
The data was released by the report “Dying in Prison” by Ristretti Orizzonti, which recorded all deaths that occurred in prison during the year.
The situation is particularly serious in the prisons of Roma and Milan, where 4 and 3 suicides were recorded respectively. In these two institutions, inmates took their own lives by hanging, suffocating themselves with small gas cylinders or burning themselves.
Other prisons where more than one suicide has occurred are Terni (3), Taranto (3), the women's section of Turin (3), Milan Opera (3), Verona (3), Pescara (3) and Venice (3).
In some cases, prisoners have let themselves die while on hunger strike. This happened in Augusta, where two prisoners took their own lives after 40 days of fasting.
The Ristretti Orizzonti report denounces the serious situation of suffering experienced in Italian prisons. Prisoners are often subjected to conditions of overcrowding, degradation and isolation, which can lead to serious psychological problems and extreme actions.
The association calls on institutions to intervene urgently to improve living conditions in prison and prevent suicides.
