During the Fifa congress held in Bangkok, President Gianni Infantino outlined a series of innovations that could revolutionize the world of football. Among the main innovations announced, an improved and more accessible VAR system stands out, along with new tournaments for youth categories.
Infantino explained: “We intend to develop and improve the VAR. A more basic technology has been created, with fewer cameras and no match officials are needed, so it will be more accessible to everyone. The system is already active”. This new version of VAR will allow coaches to request the technology's intervention on two occasions, with the possibility for players to ask the coach to use one of the slots.
If the initial decision were to be changed, coaches would not lose their slots and would continue to have two at their disposal. In addition to technological innovations, Infantino announced a series of initiatives aimed at promoting youth football globally. “The Under 17 World Cup will be played every year and with 48 teams. The Under 20 will be every two years and with 24 teams”, the president declared.
He also introduced the idea of an Under-15 World Cup or an international festival that could involve all the teams in the world. Infantino also revealed ambitious plans for women's football: “In 2026 there will be a Women’s Club World Cup with 16 participating teams, as well as an U17 World Cup every year because we cannot deny any young girl the dream of participating in this event.”
