An African promontory looms over the central-western Mediterranean, causing conditions weather dry across much of Italy.
Afternoon thunderstorms are possible over the Alps and locally over the Apennines. Temperatures remain well above average from north to south, with highs between 35°C and 40°C.
Some models are predicting a change as we enter next weekend. An Atlantic trough could bring a general drop in temperatures starting early next week.
Forecast for today:
North: Scattered clouds in the morning, with dry weather except for possible showers in the central Alps. Between the afternoon and evening instability in the eastern Alps with scattered thunderstorms, large spaces of clear skies elsewhere.
Center: Dry weather with clear skies in the morning and partly cloudy in the afternoon. No changes in the evening with large clearings.
South and Islands: Sunny skies in the morning. In the afternoon, cloud cover on the peninsular Apennine reliefs with the possibility of brief and isolated showers. Dry weather and large clearings in the evening and night. Minimum and maximum temperatures stable or slightly rising.
Forecast for tomorrow:
North: Mostly sunny skies in the morning. Isolated showers in the central-eastern Alps in the afternoon, no changes elsewhere. In the evening stable weather conditions with possible showers in the mountains of Alto Adige.
Center: Clear skies in the morning. Localized instability in the Apennines between Marche and Umbria in the afternoon. In the evening, still dry weather with no clouds.
South and Islands: Sunny skies in the morning. Clouds on the peninsular Apennine reliefs in the afternoon with the possibility of brief and isolated showers between Basilicata and Calabria. Dry weather with clear or partly cloudy skies in the evening and night. Minimum and maximum temperatures stable or slightly rising from north to south.
Trend for the next few days:
Intense heat with possible afternoon thunderstorms, especially on the mountains. Maximum temperatures close to 40°C. Starting from Saturday, temperatures are expected to drop, with a return to values more in line with the average for the period.
