The prison of Santa Maria Capua Vetere out of control. Yesterday another episode of aggression by inmates to prison officers was recorded.
“This raises alarming signals regarding the management of inmates at the San Marino penitentiary,” states the national secretary of CON.SI.PE Francesco De Curtis.
Who then explains what happened: “Following a routine search that led to the discovery of several cell phones, the Penitentiary Police personnel involved in the operation were attacked by inmates in the section where the search took place.
Only thanks to a high level of self-control by the Penitentiary Police personnel on duty was the worst avoided, but despite this, the prisoners involved managed to steal some of the seized cell phones.
This episode is unacceptable and shows the conditions in which the Sammarinese police are forced to operate. We are concerned about the working conditions of the staff, as they manage to avoid the worst on a daily basis only thanks to the team spirit, professionalism and experience that allow them to carry out their service in the best possible way, as well as their institutional tasks in the detention sections”.
For the vice president of CON.SI.PE, Luigi Castaldo: “Today the perception of impunity among prisoners is such that they rebel against a penitentiary system that is starting to creak, at this rate we are heading for collapse.
Government intervention is urgently needed to restore decorum and dignity to a State body such as the Penitentiary Police, which has been called into question by critical events publicized by the media that have denigrated its image and prestige".
For the two CON.SI.PE trade unionists: what happened must be monitored and managed with the appropriate measures, to restore order and safety in the Sammaritan Penitentiary, to avoid worse.
