Lauro – The Ministry of Justice has firmly denied rumours of an alleged closure of the Institute for Attenuated Custody for Detained Mothers (Icam) in Lauro, in the province of Avellino.
In an official note, the ministry defined the hypothesis circulating in some press organs as “unfounded”, reiterating that the Campania Icam is operational and currently hosts three detained mothers.
In addition to Lauro, the Icam of Turin, Milan, Venice and Cagliari remain active, with a total capacity of 88 places, of which only 20 are occupied. The Ministry has underlined the commitment of the Department of Penitentiary Administration in the protection of detained mothers and their children, with particular attention to the "supreme interest of minors". A clarification that reaffirms the continuity of the Icam project at a national level.
