Benevento – A night of tension, chases and an explosive device thrown from the window of a moving car. Two men, a 35-year-old and a 19-year-old from Naples, were arrested by the Carabinieri of the Operational and Radiomobile Unit of the Benevento Company, together with their colleagues from the San Giorgio del Sannio Station, after a dangerous escape that ended with the discovery of a potentially devastating homemade device.
The military were engaged in a territorial control service on the night between Saturday and Sunday when they noticed a suspicious vehicle. When asked to stop, the driver ignored the stop, starting a high-speed chase. During the escape, some objects were thrown from the passenger side of the car. One of these, as it was later discovered, was a rudimentary explosive device, hidden inside a neck warmer, capable - according to initial investigations - of causing serious damage within a radius of at least 10-15 meters.
The car was quickly blocked thanks to the timely intervention of the military, while the device was made safe by the bomb disposal experts of the Provincial Carabinieri Command of Caserta. At the moment, investigations are underway into the origin of the explosive material and any objectives or uses planned by the two arrested. The charges against them are serious: possession and carrying of an explosive device. Both are now in prison.
