Giugliano – An operation by the Carabinieri of the Radiomobile Section of the Giugliano Company led to the arrest of 5 people for attempted money laundering, after the discovery of a Maserati Levante in an illegal garage in the Ponte Riccio district.
The operations center had reported to the military the presence of the luxury vehicle - already reported as stolen - in a garage located in Prima Traversa Ponte Riccio 34. Thanks to the car's GPS signal, the Carabinieri raided the premises, discovering that the suspects were already working to change the vehicle's identity:
Removed plates, chassis number altered with a cloned serial number. It was a
illegal workshop equipped for the “cleaning” of stolen cars. The five, taken by surprise, tried in vain to escape before being stopped and arrested.
Here's who's arrested
Those arrested, all residents of the Neapolitan hinterland, are:
GALIANO Emanuele, 30 years old
RUSSO Ciro, 59 years old
RUSSO Gennaro, 27 years old
RUSSO Rosario, 55 years old
VILLANI Gaetano, 41 years old
INVESTIGATIONS IN PROGRESS
The Maserati Levante was seized and will be returned to its rightful owner. Investigators are now investigating any links to other criminal activities, including high-end car thefts and organized receiving of stolen goods.
The phenomenon of “Car Cloning”
The episode is part of the wider phenomenon of cloning luxury vehicles, a widespread practice in organizations dedicated to Recycling, which alter the identification data of cars to resell them on the illegal market.

The Carabinieri operation seems very important and relevant, but I wonder how these people can do it without being caught first. It is worrying to think about how many stolen vehicles there are.
