A newborn baby died moments after birth at the “Umberto I” hospital in Nocera Inferiore.
The tragedy occurred yesterday morning and prompted the family of the little girl, named Beatrice, to file a complaint with the police. The prosecutor's office has opened an investigation to shed light on what happened.
According to what was reported by Fratelli d'Italia MP Imma Vietri, the mother - a young doctor from Pagani - had repeatedly asked to give birth by cesarean section, but the medical team had opted for natural birth, in line with hospital protocol.
For the family, however, the woman's psychophysical conditions were not compatible with spontaneous birth.
"I express my closeness to the family of little Beatrice," declared Vietri, announcing a parliamentary question to the Minister of Health.
«It is necessary to ascertain whether at the time of birth there were adequate organizational conditions, both in terms of personnel and essential equipment and services such as intensive care and transfusion center».
The parliamentarian then pointed the finger at the critical issues of the Campania healthcare system: «This tragedy is yet another demonstration of the malfunctioning of healthcare in Campania.
Despite the commitment of health workers, the lack of resources and personnel exposes both patients and doctors to very serious risks. Immediate intervention by the government is essential".
The judicial investigations will now try to ascertain any responsibilities and clarify whether there were errors or negligence in the management of the birth.
