Pozzuoli – The Carabinieri of the Pozzuoli Forestry Unit surprised three individuals intent on carrying out clandestine excavations in the Cuma Regional Forest, a protected area of the Campi Flegrei Regional Park, subject to archaeological, environmental and landscape restrictions.
The operation was triggered during a routine patrol in protected areas.
The three, equipped with metal detectors, pinpointers, excavation shovels and knives, were scanning the ground for artifacts. In their possession, a bag containing stones, including flints, sedimentary rocks typical of the Campi Flegrei.
They had metal detectors, pinpointers and digging shovels.
The Carabinieri seized the equipment and the collected material, reporting those responsible for violating art. 707 bis of the Penal Code, a law introduced in 2022 to combat crimes against cultural heritage.
The intervention confirms the commitment of the Arma in the protection of archaeological and environmental sites, threatened by illegal excavations that fuel the black market of finds, often managed by the so-called "archaeomafias".
