The images, spread in real time on social networks, made the event go viral, although without consequences for the population.
Fourteenth eruptive phase in recent months for the European giant, which however has not interrupted operations at Catania airport, which has remained regularly open despite the "red" level of the aviation alert (VONA). Meanwhile, the energy of the phenomenon is decreasing: the volcanic tremor, after having reached high peaks, has dropped to medium-high levels.
Crater collapse: high column of smoke
In the morning, around 9.24, a pyroclastic flow was generated by the collapse of the northern flank of the South-East crater. According to the INGV-Osservatorio Etneo, the incandescent material would not have exceeded the Valle del Leone, while the explosive activity transformed into a lava fountain.
The tremor recorded very high values, with epicenter in the crater area, while infrasonic activity also remains intense. Monitoring networks do not report significant ground deformations, but the DRUV station continues to detect variations.
Etna, therefore, never ceases to amaze, but at the moment there is no cause for alarm for residents and travellers.
