Napoli– An out-of-control car caused panic on the night between Friday 20 and Saturday 21 June in via Petrarca, which was transformed for the umpteenth time into an improvised racetrack.
At 04:18 a.m., the driver, described by residents as visibly impaired, possibly from alcohol or drug abuse, lost control on a curve, crashing into four parked vehicles and causing extensive damage.
Immediately after the impact, the driver fled, leaving chaos and indignation in his wake. The exasperated citizens reported the episode to the deputy of the Green Left Alliance, Francesco Emilio Borrelli, underlining the lack of night controls on the city streets.
Despite reports to the police, the response was disconcerting: no injuries or deaths, the images from the security cameras video surveillance cannot be viewed to identify the person responsible.
“It is unacceptable that we have to wait for a tragedy to intervene,” Borrelli said. “In Naples, every night, cars speed by at crazy speeds, putting lives and property at risk. The logic of acting only after a tragedy fuels impunity.”
The deputy announced that he would pressure the authorities to clarify the intervention protocols and, if necessary, modify them. “I ask for more night patrols, the installation of speed detectors and immediate access to camera images in cases like this,” he added. “Via Petrarca, like other streets, has become a circuit for clandestine races. We cannot allow the safety of citizens to be sacrificed.”
The incident reignites the debate on the lack of nighttime controls in Naples, where reckless driving is now the order of the day. Without decisive action, the risk of tragedy remains just around the corner.
