Naples – Law enforcement continues to exert pressure on troubled areas of the city center.

As part of the extraordinary territorial control operations implemented by the Naples Police Headquarters to combat drug trafficking, officers from the Vicaria-Mercato Police Station arrested a 31-year-old Sierra Leonean man, already known to law enforcement, on charges of possession with intent to sell and resisting a public official.

The exchange and the pursuit

The operation began yesterday afternoon on Via Carbonara, a short walk from Porta Capuana. During patrol, officers noticed the 31-year-old man, cautiously handing over a package to a buyer in exchange for money.

Upon seeing the police, the buyer quickly fled, while the dealer was immediately caught by the officers. The man attempted to forcefully resist the arrest, engaging in a struggle with the officers before being finally subdued.

The seizure and house search

Six bags of marijuana and two methamphetamine pills were found on the suspect. However, suspecting he might be hiding additional supplies, the police extended the search to his home.

Inside the building, a complete "kit" for packaging the drug was discovered: a precision scale and various materials for preparing doses for the illegal market.

All the material was seized, while the 31-year-old was arrested. The operation is part of a broader monitoring strategy in the Vicaria and Mercato areas, aimed at dismantling mobile drug dealing hubs that exploit the constant flow of people through the neighborhood's main thoroughfares.

It's very important that law enforcement agencies do their job to combat drug trafficking in downtown Naples. However, I wonder if these operations are effective enough to stop this long-standing problem.
