The Acerra arsonist in action
Acerra – A tall column of black smoke rising into the sky over the Acerra countryside prompted the intervention of the Carabinieri of the local station yesterday afternoon. On Via Volturno, near the Regi Lagni, a pile of hazardous waste—including tires, sheathing, and plastic materials—had been set alight, threatening the surrounding area.
Technology betrayed the alleged arsonist. The affected area is covered by a municipal video surveillance system: the immediate analysis of the footage by the military allowed them to isolate the crucial images. The videos clearly showed a man stoking the blaze and then calmly riding away on a bicycle.
The Carabinieri immediately set out on his trail, intercepting and blocking him a short distance from the scene of the disaster.
The order: The man, a 68-year-old pensioner, was handcuffed on charges of illegal waste combustion. He is currently under house arrest, awaiting trial by the judicial authorities.
