Elderly scam alert in Naples
She allegedly showed up at the door of a 94-year-old woman, posing as a police officer investigating stolen property. Using this ruse, she allegedly convinced the elderly woman to hand over money, jewelry, and a cell phone, before fleeing and attempting to escape by train.
The protagonist of the case is a 43-year-old woman from Naples, stopped by the Carabinieri aboard a convoy that had departed shortly before from Belluno. The officers, after identifying her, proceeded to search her luggage and clothing, recovering the entire loot that had apparently been stolen from the elderly woman shortly before.
According to investigators' reconstruction, the woman apparently didn't act alone. She apparently had an accomplice, who allegedly kept the 94-year-old's home phone busy throughout the scam, preventing her from communicating with the outside world and making it more difficult for her to call for help.
Once she had obtained the goods stored in the house, the 43-year-old then went to the station and boarded a train in an attempt to quickly leave the area. Her escape, however, was short-lived: the Carabinieri managed to locate her and recover the stolen goods.
The incident is part of a monitoring effort begun weeks ago by Belluno police on the movements of one or more scam organizations originating in the Campania region. Investigators are focusing in particular on predatory crimes committed by defrauding elderly people in the provinces of Belluno and Treviso.
