The knocked down lamppost
A roar in the night, then sudden darkness. It was around midnight when a Fiat Panda, traveling along Via Luigi Rocco, turned onto Via Mazzini. Suddenly, the driver lost control of the vehicle. Near the building that once housed the historic Ruggmasc sports club, the small car became a wildcat: it struck a parked white Ford head-on, before being violently thrown into the oncoming lane.
The Panda's speed was halted only by a sturdy streetlight pole, which literally bent over on impact. The impact was exceptionally violent, knocking out the electrical system and immediately triggering a short circuit. The entire area was plunged into darkness.
Emergency medical services rushed to the scene with sirens blaring. The scene they encountered was critical: the driver was trapped in the Panda's twisted metal. Extracted from the vehicle with a delicate maneuver, the man was rushed to the emergency room at Cardarelli Hospital in Naples. His condition is serious, but his life is not thought to be in danger. He also underwent all the necessary tests to determine whether he was fit to drive at the time of the impact.
Law enforcement has cordoned off the area and begun investigations to accurately reconstruct the causes and determine any responsibilities.
Only at first light did the nightmare end. The contractor's technicians sprang into action in a true race against time: removing the downed pylon, securing the roadway, and repairing the fault. After hours of non-stop work, the operations restored power and reopened the road to regular traffic, restoring normality to the neighborhood.
