Increased controls in the hours following the tremors

The extraordinary anti-looting operations implemented by the Carabinieri of the Pozzuoli Company following the July 31 earthquake that struck the Campi Flegrei area continue. The goal is to prevent thefts and break-ins into homes and cars left unattended by residents during the ongoing earthquakes.

Just during the night, about half an hour after the last tremor, the military noticed a small car driving slowly among parked cars, many of which were still covered in dust raised by the 4.7 magnitude earthquake.

The control in Via Artiaco

The Carabinieri's Mobile Radio Unit focused their attention on the car, stopped on Via Artiaco. The vehicle was driving with a test license plate that partially covered the original one.

The driver was a 60-year-old auto body repairman, a resident of the Sanità neighborhood of Naples with no criminal record. According to the police's reconstruction, the man was unable to provide a valid explanation for his presence in the area at the time.

Resistance to the military and seized material

Suspicious of the circumstances and the man's professional activity, the Carabinieri decided to proceed with a search. However, the 60-year-old allegedly resisted the search and threatened the officers, who managed to subdue him, not without difficulty.

Inside the car, a multipurpose tool, two folding knives, two box cutters, and a knuckleduster were found, material believed to be consistent with break-in activities.

The arrest

Following the investigation, the body shop mechanic was arrested on charges of resisting a public officer and illegal possession of weapons and burglary equipment. The incident is part of the enhanced surveillance measures implemented by the Carabinieri to combat potential looting in the areas most affected by the earthquake.
