Rome – A preliminary hearing is scheduled for tomorrow morning in Rebibbia prison for Valter Lavitola, arrested Monday on charges of instigating the attack on journalist Sigfrido Ranucci near Rome on October 16, 2019. Prosecutors from the Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA) in Piazzale Clodio are alleging that the suspect is being subjected to mafia-related methods.

Meanwhile, Cameroonian citizen Gomes Clesio Tavares, Lavitola's handyman, remains at large. Investigators believe he is the go-between for the gang that actually planted the explosive device outside Ranucci's home in Pomezia.

The man is believed to be in Africa, and according to reports, prosecutors are ready to initiate proceedings to request his extradition to Italy.

Meanwhile, yesterday afternoon, Lavitola's cell phone and computer were seized by Carabinieri from the Investigative Unit, who served him with a precautionary detention order issued by the investigating judge following an investigation by the Rome prosecutor's office.

These devices will now be analyzed, just as the examination of the material seized last July 4th during the search of Lavitola's home is ongoing. At that time, three cell phones, two thumb drives, and seven manuscripts were seized and brought to the attention of investigators. Lavitola is accused of instigating the attack.
