Security emergency in Secondigliano: new attack on prison staff

Secondigliano prison is experiencing a growing internal security emergency. Today, a prison police inspector was attacked by an inmate known for his violent nature. This incident is part of a well-established pattern, where the facility houses a large number of inmates transferred from other facilities precisely because of their dangerousness.

According to OSAPP regional secretary Vincenzo Palmieri, the Naples prison administration's decision to concentrate these problematic individuals in Secondigliano, without distributing them to other regional prisons or beyond, is exacerbating the situation. Palmieri emphasizes that this strategy increases critical issues, jeopardizing not only the safety of staff but also treatment activities.

Overcrowding is a further source of tension: there are currently approximately 1500 inmates, while the prison police force is less than half the planned staffing level, with approximately 700 personnel on duty. This disparity makes the day-to-day management of the facility difficult and contributes to a climate of high tension.

The OSAPP union has announced that it will lobby departmental and regional leaders to implement a more balanced redistribution of inmates, with at least half of the most problematic inmates transferred to other suitable prison facilities, both within and outside the region.

Palmieri finally expressed solidarity with the attacked inspector, reiterating the need for urgent interventions to ensure the safety of prison staff and improve detention conditions.
