The vigil in front of Gaetano Russo's shop and in the second panel Andrea Sirica
The trial of Andrea Sirica, 34, from Sarno, will begin on October 15th before the Salerno Assize Court. The defendant is charged with the murder, aggravated by cruelty and impaired defense, of Gaetano Russo, a baker and delicatessen owner killed on the night of February 3rd inside his business in Piazza Sabotino, Cappella Vecchia.
Sirica was ordered to be tried immediately, a decision that expedites the trial due to the seriousness of the facts and the clarity of the evidence gathered during the investigation.
According to the prosecution's reconstruction, Sirica entered the store around 12:30 a.m., following an argument, and grabbed a knife with a blade approximately 34 centimeters long, striking Russo with multiple fatal blows. The attack apparently occurred in the presence of the victim's 19-year-old daughter, who described moments of terror and begged the attacker to stop.
The trial will have to clarify in detail the dynamics, criminal liability, and motive for the attack, which has yet to be determined with certainty.
Francesco Emilio Borrelli, MP for the Green and Left Alliance, spoke out on the matter, calling Gaetano Russo's murder a "terrible" event that has "deeply shocked the Sarno community." "A man who was simply doing his job, known and loved by many, was brutally torn from his family," Borrelli said, emphasizing the need to "once again stand with the family" to support their fight.
The parliamentarian then reiterated his commitment to "standing by the Russo family" and supporting their demand for truth and justice. "The trial will naturally have to ascertain all responsibility and reconstruct precisely what happened. We will continue to support their fight. Gaetano must not be forgotten, and his sacrifice cannot become just a news story destined to fade with the passage of time," Borrelli concluded.
Sirica's defense, led by attorney Giuseppe Mancuso, disputes the prosecution's reconstruction and relies on images and other evidence acquired in the case file. The trial will therefore also be a forum for opposing arguments, with the goal of reaching a judicial truth that can provide answers to the family and the community of Sarno.
