The horror of Gragnano: "She passed out and was consumed by flames while her daughter watched her."

Gragnano – This was neither a tragic domestic fatality nor yet another incident caused by a flashback. The investigative investigation conducted by the Carabinieri of the Castellammare di Stabia Company and the Gragnano Station, coordinated by the Torre Annunziata Public Prosecutor's Office (led by Prosecutor Nunzio Fragliasso), has brought a drastic turn to the investigation into the death of Genoveffa "Gena" Totaro, the 75-year-old woman found charred on the balcony of her home on Via Vittorio Veneto.

The hand of justice was activated by the arrest warrant issued by the Public Prosecutor against the victim's 45-year-old daughter, FB, on suspicion of crime. She is charged with voluntary homicide aggravated by family ties and attempted arson.

The cut gas pipe and the fire trap

The prosecution's case is based on technical findings and precise investigative evidence. According to investigators' reconstruction, the 45-year-old allegedly deliberately cut the apartment's gas pipe and then set it on fire. This planned act quickly ignited a blaze, filling the apartment and engulfing the mother.

The Carabinieri found clear signs of physical abuse on the suspect's body and arms, indicative of a physical altercation that occurred shortly after the fire. During questioning before the magistrate, the woman admitted to having had constant disagreements with her elderly mother, the final and most serious of which occurred on the morning of the crime.

The prosecutor's words: "He stared at his unconscious mother and then walked away."

The most dramatic passages of the arrest warrant lie in the assessments that the Public Prosecutor formally made regarding the 45-year-old's behavior during and immediately after the fire started.

In the decree, the prosecutor emphasizes that the woman did not provide any assistance to her mother on the ground after she had lost consciousness, "limiting herself to watching the poor unconscious woman as she was devoured by the flames."

This conduct was deemed ruthless and avoidable. The investigating magistrate emphasized that the suspect had "the physical possibility of dragging the woman away from the flames and providing her with the necessary assistance, yet instead she stared at her for several minutes and then decided to leave the home."

Emotional detachment and the testimonies of the rescuers

The prosecution's reconstruction was also supported by statements made by a neighbor and a passerby, the first to notice the smoke and to courageously intervene to try to put out the fire. Both witnesses told the Carabinieri that the victim's daughter, who was outside or near the building, "did not appear particularly concerned about her mother's fate."

Faced with the forensic findings and the inconsistencies in her account, during the overnight interrogation, the 45-year-old essentially confirmed that she had set the fire and remained inert without calling or providing help. Among the elements being examined further is her mental state assessment: investigators have identified suspected psychological problems that will need to be assessed through specific forensic and psychiatric assessments.

The apartment has been placed under seizure to allow further technical investigations by the Fire Brigade and the Forensic Police, while Genoveffa Totaro's body is available to the judicial authorities for an autopsy.

Family dramas

In the context of the judicial investigation, a detail regarding the Totaro family's history needs to be clarified. Genoveffa Totaro was the maternal grandmother of Alessandro Cascone, the 13-year-old boy who tragically died in Gragnano in September 2022 due to bullying. The woman arrested for the murder, FB (45), is the young man's aunt, not his mother. This detail paints a vivid picture of a family unit already deeply affected by grief.
