Agerola fire: Deputy Mayor: "The community is at risk."

Hours of fear have passed in Agerola, where a vast fire has swept across the area, reaching homes and accommodations. Dozens of hectares of Mediterranean scrub have gone up in smoke, while firefighters and volunteers worked throughout the night to contain the flames and protect the community.

Luca Mascolo, deputy mayor of Agerola and president of Anea and the Campania Water Authority, spoke about the incident. "Agerola is burning. And it's no coincidence," Mascolo said, emphasizing the severity of a fire that affected a particularly fragile area.

The deputy mayor then focused on the possibility that the fire may have been started deliberately: "Someone lit that fire. And if the fire's intentional nature is confirmed, whoever started it endangered people, homes, and an already fragile area."

This fear is primarily linked to the flames' proximity to residential areas. "It's not just trees that are burning here: the mountain itself is being put at risk, and with it, the safety of the community," adds Mascolo.

At the most critical moment, rescue teams worked tirelessly to prevent the fire from spreading further to homes and structures. The municipal administration representative thanked those who responded: "Thanks to our extraordinary Civil Protection volunteers, the regional Civil Protection teams, volunteers from neighboring municipalities, the firefighters, and everyone who worked tirelessly to protect homes."

Then came the political attack, aimed at those who, according to Mascolo, had used the emergency to fuel controversy: "Shame on those who lit the flames and shame on those who, instead of knowing the facts, speculate from afar."

The deputy mayor concludes with a plea to avoid reconstructions lacking verified evidence: "We will not accept lectures from those who know these territories, or should know them, and choose to pretend to ignore their reality. We will not accept speculation from those who, faced with an emergency, prefer propaganda to truth."
