Attempted murder in Trieste court: soldier attacks ex-girlfriend after sentencing

An Army soldier violently attacked his ex-partner in court immediately after the verdict was read, giving him a six-month suspended sentence. The prompt intervention of law enforcement prevented worse consequences.

An episode of violence occurred in a Trieste courtroom, where a 40-year-old Army soldier, Agostino Di Novo, attempted to attack his ex-partner after the sentencing verdict was read. The man, charged with assaulting the woman, was sentenced to six months in prison, suspended.

Immediately after the sentence was announced, Di Novo rose from the dock and attacked the 35-year-old woman, repeatedly hitting her with a sharp object.

The victim was sitting next to honorary deputy prosecutor Alessandra D'Aversa when she was attacked. Fortunately, a Carabiniere and a police officer present in the courtroom, serving as witnesses in another trial, intervened quickly and subdued the attacker, who was arrested in the act. Prosecutor Giorgio Milillo has initiated proceedings for attempted murder.

The woman was immediately treated by Sores medical staff and taken to the emergency room with injuries to her neck and leg. Meanwhile, a court employee secured the victim, taking her to the courtroom and locking it in to protect her from the attacker. The man was already accused of previously attacking the woman, grabbing her arms and pushing her in an attempt to evict her from the house.

The incident has shocked the local community and brought renewed attention to the need for security within judicial systems, underscoring the need for more effective measures to prevent similar acts of violence.
