Avellino, the new Moscati Emergency Room has opened. Fico: "We're strengthening our emergency department."

The Emergency Department at the San Giuseppe Moscati Hospital in Avellino is undergoing a makeover. The new spaces were inaugurated following the completion of renovations that virtually doubled the available space.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by Campania Region President Roberto Fico, who highlighted the strengthening of the emergency response network as one of the regional guidelines for action.

«We are working to strengthen the emergency-urgency network, on territorial medicine and telemedicine and with the community homes and hospitals, hospitals will once again be a place where people in need and acute patients are treated», declared Fico.

During the inauguration, Moscati's general director, Germano Perito, drew attention to the percentage of admissions that actually lead to hospitalization.

"Only 20 percent of admissions result in hospitalization: clearly, there's a need for care that shouldn't be provided by the hospital but, we hope, by the local health system," Perito explained.

One of the key issues remains the shortage of doctors in emergency services. According to Fico, the Region is focusing on increasing salaries and training staff.

"We managed to increase the compensation for all those working in the Emergency Department for both the 2025 and 2026 backlogs," the president said.

Fico also emphasized the importance of the relationship between healthcare workers and patients, especially in times of greatest vulnerability. "An extra word, an extra bit of communication," he emphasized, "fosters an important connection with people experiencing a time of concern."

Moscati's new structure therefore represents a part of a broader regional emergency network project, along with the strengthening of local healthcare and the development of telemedicine.
