Caserta's swimming stadium remains closed: another year without classes.

The Caserta Swimming Stadium remains closed. The facility, owned by the Province and located on Via Capitano Laviano, has been off limits since April 1, 2025, and will not reopen for the start of the season. It lacks a fire safety certificate and requires several million euros in renovations.

The owner hasn't provided a timeline, project, or official cost estimate. The ones paying are the sports clubs, the athletes, and thousands of families. Many, especially those with lower incomes, have activated vouchers from the Campania Region to enroll their children in swimming classes. These funds remain unavailable because the pool is closed. The gap is even greater for minors with disabilities: they used to attend courses with trained instructors at the stadium.

Today, they have to move to smaller, more crowded facilities outside the city. In Caserta, even the municipal swimming pool has been closed for years. The decline affects both competitive athletes and those who work there. Some, despite traveling and using less than Olympic-sized pools, have still managed to thrive. For others, the closure has meant regression, particularly among children with autism spectrum disorder.

Of particular concern is the silence of the Province, led by Anacleto Colombiano. The last public act was in January 2026: a collaboration protocol with the Italian Swimming Federation. The FIN was supposed to assist the organization, free of charge, in the design process to bring the facility into compliance with federal and CONI technical requirements and current regulations. The Province was still responsible for professional fees and compliance.

According to rumors, the collaboration stalled due to the costs required to reopen the facility. "We still don't have a project, and the owners' continued silence prevents us from making any predictions about reopening," says lawyer Daniele Sparano, who represents several companies that operated at the stadium. "It's extremely humiliating for the associations to have to provide explanations every day that aren't there.

Even more frustrating is the lack of consideration after more than thirty years of activity. The migration of international-level athletes and the clinical and behavioral regression in minors with disabilities, particularly those on the autism spectrum, is a defeat for everyone, not just the institutions.

Those glories are long gone. The stadium, once the jewel in the crown of Caserta's sporting history, was inaugurated in the early 1990s with a friendly water polo match between Ratko Rudić's Settebello and Yugoslavia. Today, the facility remains closed, and Caserta's new season schedule is already lost.
