Naples, Domenico Caliendo case: the 'super expert report' will be filed today.

Naples – Today, Thursday, September 10, 2026, is the deadline for filing the so-called "super expert report" ordered by Naples investigating judge Mariano Sorrentino as part of the investigation into the death of Domenico Caliendo, the almost two-and-a-half-year-old boy who died on February 21 at the Monaldi Hospital in Naples following a failed heart transplant performed on December 23, 2025.

The report, entrusted to a panel of experts composed of Professors Biagio Solarino, Ugolino Livi, and Ferdinando Luca Lorini, will answer a series of questions posed by the judge regarding the dynamics of the events that occurred between the date of the surgery and the date of the child's death.

The evidentiary value of the super expert report

The "super expert report" represents a crucial piece of evidence: it will be able to clarify key technical and medical aspects for reconstructing the chain of responsibility in the investigation, which currently has seven doctors under investigation for manslaughter.

In particular, the tests will shed light on the condition of the transplanted organ, the methods of preservation and transport, and the clinical management of the young patient in the post-operative period.

The hearing for the extension is tomorrow

A hearing has already been scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, September 11th, during which the investigating judge will consider the parties' request for an extension, which will almost certainly be granted. Only after the extension is granted will lawyers and consultants be able to formally review the expert's report and prepare any counterarguments or additions.

The appeal of the banned surgeons to the Review Court

Also tomorrow, another high-profile hearing will be held before the Naples Review Court: the one regarding the motions filed by the lawyers of cardiac surgeons Guido Oppido and Emma Bergonzoni, who have already been banned from practicing medicine for 12 and 7 months, respectively. The two doctors are accused of altering Domenico's medical records, modifying the chronological reconstruction of the key moments of the surgery.

According to chats seized by the Prosecutor's Office, at least three different drafts of the surgical report were prepared between December 23rd and 26th before reaching the final version included in the medical records.

The next steps of the investigation

In addition to the technical assessment, the investigation includes further investigations, including the analysis of the seized phones and the preliminary investigation of the two hearts involved: the child's diseased one and the one that arrived unusable from Bolzano, presumably damaged by contact with dry ice during transport.
