Naples: Waste and degradation at the entrance to the Galleria Umberto I

MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli denounces the state of disrepair at the entrance to the Galleria Umberto I on Via San Carlo and calls for surveillance camera footage to be acquired to identify those who abandoned waste, urinated, and started a small fire.

Green-Left Alliance MP Francesco Emilio Borrelli has submitted a new report regarding the conditions of the entrance to the Galleria Umberto I in Naples, particularly the area on the Via San Carlo side.

According to the images attached to the report, in the area there is abandoned waste (mostly attributable to fast food packaging), traces of urine and signs of a small fire that damaged the marble.

"It's shameful that one of Naples' most important monuments is being treated like a landfill, a public restroom, and now even a place for burning. The Galleria Umberto I cannot continue to be held hostage by uncivilized people and vandals," Borrelli declared.

The MP emphasizes that he has repeatedly raised the problem of waste related to takeout food in the Galleria and surrounding areas. "Many customers purchase products from restaurants within the site, starting with McDonald's, and then move on, leaving packaging, cups, and waste even near the Via San Carlo entrance. A serious agreement with the fast-food businesses in the area is needed to strengthen cleanliness, bins, surveillance, and checks during the evening and night hours," he adds.

Borrelli also requests that footage from surveillance cameras in the area be acquired "to identify those who littered, urinated, and started the fire." "If they are minors," he states, "their families should also be held accountable in the appropriate courts. Anyone who destroys and damages public property must be punished and made responsible for the damages themselves."
