Pregnant inmate loses baby, Guarantor calls for review of healthcare at ICAM centers.

A reflection on the organization of healthcare in low-security institutions for mothers. This is the request of the regional guarantor for persons deprived of their personal liberty, Samuele Ciambriello, speaking on the case of a pregnant inmate housed at the ICAM in Lauro.

Due to complications during her pregnancy, the woman had been admitted to Moscati Hospital in Avellino and later transferred to Bellizzi prison after the loss of her baby. "A thorough reflection on the organization of healthcare within the ICAM centers is needed," says Ciambriello.

The guarantor places particular emphasis on the possibility of providing, when clinical conditions allow, a specialist evaluation directly within the facility, avoiding repeated hospital transfers.

"Faced with a high-risk pregnancy, characterized by repeated bleeding and prescribed bed rest, it's appropriate to ask whether a gynecological evaluation could have been arranged directly at the facility, where clinically feasible, thus avoiding repeated hospital transfers and the resulting psychological and physical stress for the inmate. It's not a question of assigning responsibility, but rather of determining whether the care pathway adopted was the most appropriate for the individual's condition," Ciambriello emphasizes.

According to data reported by the Guarantor, the ICAM in Lauro currently houses 15 women and 15 children. Among the inmates is a pregnant woman.

Ciambriello also draws attention to the need to adequately support people coping with loss, with specific psychological interventions.

The guarantor highlights the need to "provide psychological help and support for grieving when necessary," thus underscoring the importance of care that takes into account not only clinical needs but also the psychological consequences of losing a child.
